Horror movies go back almost to the very beginning of the film industry. Why? Simply because people like to be shocked and scared by something that they know deep in their hears cannot hurt them. It is only a movie, right? Right?... Ya right. Then why do you check under the bed and take a long look in the closet after you get done watching a horror movie? Deep down you know why. It is because there really are things that go bump in the night Most horror movies are rated R for the extreme violence and blood letting.

The idea that some of this stuff could happen is, of course, to fantastic to be real. Well, except in the case of The Silence of the Lambs. Serial killers really exist and they do horrible things. And there is the case of poor old James Caan who is rescued by a fan. I.E. Fanatic. She puts his character through all kinds of Misery. We have all heard of the strange behavior of people stalking celebrities. They all of course start out with the title of "Fan" but slip over the edge into stalker when they take it too far. It is not just the major guns or the studio A list that has this problem. Ask any cute local news anchor if she has not had some unwanted attention from one or more of these nuts.

John Lennon was murdered by one as was Rebecca Schaeffer. She was only 21 years old when she was gunned down by a fan, "Who felt as if he knew her." from the TV promo spots for the series, "My Sister Sam."

The classic "Rosemary's Baby" is about a satanic cult who try and steal a woman's baby as a gife to Satan. Do a google search fro the words, " satanic cult", and you get 1,230,000 returns. "Ritual Child Abuse", is a favorite hype among the satanists. Weather it happens all that often is not very clear.

The are also peopl who beleive themslves to be Vampires, Werewolfs, and possesed by demons. Oh Ya, this is a strange old world we live in. "Psycho was a picture of a psycho. He was twisted enough to beleive that his mother somehow lived in him and was the real killer. Howmuch less twisted is it to beleive that you are a vampire and have the over whealming need to drink blood.

Maybe it is the horror movie that lets us confront the fears that haunt out daily lives. There is not a day goes by that a news report of the most horrible abuse of the young and innocent is not reported. These types of people exist, they live next door to us, we see them in the grocery store buying food that their abused children will never eat. They are horror incarnate. It is better for our oun souls to confront our fears in a movie. Better to wrestle with the fiction of horror than the reality of horror that surrounds us?
